Virtual reality (VR) is a computer technology that allows its users to interact with an imaginary environment. It is a simulated experience that employs 3D near-eye displays to ensure the immersion of its users in that environment. Immersion and presence of users are the key features of VR due to which it stands out from the rest of the media.

Cinematic Virtual Reality

This astounding technology brings real magic to the world of cinematography. This is 360 video filmed with a panoramic camera system. It allows its users to look around the scene as it unfolds. Interestingly the video is played back as an equirectangular file that wraps like a sphere. This provides viewers with an accurate panoramic view.

Spatial sound microphones are used to capture scenes with real sound simulation. It’s as if you are dropped in the movie, watching the video or movie while present right in the middle of each scene. However, unlike in gaming engines, you can’t move around the scenes frequently unless they are moved during filming. With further advances in technology, one day you would be able to do this as well.

The scenes could be either monoscopic( flat) or 3D (stereoscopic) depending on the type of camera system and the stitching process of the scenes.

What is the Difference Between Stereoscopic and Monoscopic VR?

Virtual reality footage can is of two types.

  • Flat or monoscopic, having no depth, since no parallax is present hence both eyes view the same image. Then everything is projected back to the equal depth of 360 viewing sphere. In monoscopic VR if you turn around your head, the image only seems bigger, not really closer to you.
  • 360 Stereoscopic 3D provides you with full 3D images in every direction. Here objects get closer to you in whichever direction you see. Another interesting fact about 3D VR is that each eye perceives the same image differently. This is either due to parallax resulting from each eye due to separation between eyes or cameras. Therefore the viewer has a much more immersive feeling as if he is experiencing the scene in the real life. You can feel yourself flying in the sky or diving underwater with scenes. No doubt, this experience is matchless.

Hence proven 360 3D gives the actual virtual reality feeling. Then you might wonder, why doesn’t everyone use it then? The reason is obvious, VR filmmaking requires expensive equipment like camera rigs. The stitching process is more complicated and needs optimum professionalism in post-production.

VR cinematography is no doubt the ultimate filmmaking of the future. Eden Films is all equipped with this next-level cinematography.

What Are the Minimum VR Requirements?

At least you need four things to start with VR shooting:-

  1. Stereoscopic 3D: The true feeling of immersion in VR can be achieved only with Stereo 3D.
  2. 360 Equirectangular images: These images require camera rigs with 360 degrees field of view.
  3. 3D Spatial Sound: The true sense of VR is incomplete without 3D sound effects. Capturing spatial audio along with motion and light get your viewer’s attention as they can feel the scene happening around them.
  4. HMD: All of the above mentioned things would be useless without having a method to view them. To have real experience you need a proper HMD. Different types of HMDs are available in the market ranging from Cardboard to Ocular Rift to Samsung Gear VR and HTC Vive. The higher-end HMDs have the option of full body tracking while some include hand controllers creating a room-scale VR system. This allows your ultimate immersion in the environment.
